Falcons soar through the competition
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.  — The sound of fans cheering and helmets clashing were heard throughout Camp Pendleton’s Paige Fieldhouse football field during the championship game of the USAA Pendleton Cup Football League, Nov. 25.

This year’s season ended with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar's “Falcons” winning against 1st Marine Logistics Group’s “Beast”, in a nail-biting 9-3 victory.

The game was equally matched as it was tied at three until the last quarter, but the Falcons quickly rallied momentum in the final minutes and kept the Beast’s offense from scoring a single touchdown throughout the championship. The Beast’s only points came from a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter.

“My team came out tonight with only one thing on their mind and that was to win, plain and simple,” said Bennis Branch, head coach, Miramar.

The key to Miramar’s success was their ability to stick together through every game this season and relying on one another when games came down to the wire, said Branch.

Making a special guest appearance at the game was 1st MLG’s commanding general, Brigadier General Charles L. Hudson and Col. Philippe D. Rogers, commanding officer, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

“Seeing some of the most respected leaders of Camp Pendleton here really lets us know how much they care,” said Donnie Gilray, quarterback, Miramar.

Miramar finished the regular season with a winning record of six wins and one loss. Miramar also claimed this year’s scarlet division champions with a win over 1st Marine Regiment’s “Bulldogs,” Nov. 4.

At the end of the game, the two teams expressed good sportsmanship with a handshake at the 50-yard line following an award ceremony provided by the Camp Pendleton Athletic Department.

After being named 2009’s All-Base champions, the Falcons head to Twentynine Palms for the annual “Best of the West” showdown, Dec.9.
