3-point shoot-out brings out SMP competitive spirit
Camp Pendleton’s Single Marine Program hosted a 3-point shoot-out contest in an effort to increase the cohesion and camaraderie among its members at the 33 Area Fitness Center, Feb. 2.

During the competition, participants had three minutes to score 25 basketballs that were placed around the arch of the 3-point line. The competitor that made the most baskets won.

This year’s first place winner was Pfc. Austin Miller, rifleman, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, who made 12 of 25 shots. Second place was captured by Pfc. Daniel Stewart, rifleman, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, who made eight.

“I wasn’t expecting to take home first place,” said Miller. “When I got into my zone, I could hear my fellow Marines cheering me on from the sidelines; I knew I was on to something good,” he said.

With single Marines making up the highest percentage of the Corps and Marines having a tradition of always taking care one another, the SMP was established to offer single Marines a better quality of life.

“It is very important that the (SMP) does all it can to help provide a positive influence for Marines,” said Michael Miller, 33 Area SMP coordinator, Camp Pendleton. “Friendly competition always seems to bring out a side of a Marine that most people never get to see.”

The next sporting event for the SMP will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the 33 Area Fitness Center, Feb. 9. Those looking to participate can call the 33 AFC at (760) 725-8737 to sign up.
