The 11th annual Coronado Speed Festival, held last Saturday and
Sunday, was more than a day for classic automobile enthusiasts; it was
a day of fun for the whole family.
According to Amy Lewis, public relations director for the event, the speed festival is the Navy’s annual opportunity to offer an open house to the public and offer individuals and families an opportunity to experience a military base as they never have. The automobiles competed on the 1.7-mile course fashioned from the installation’s runways and taxiways and set against the beautiful backdrop of the San Diego Bay. Fans filled the bleachers, soaking up the gasoline-fueled glory. “These races are exciting,” said Canaan Knapp, a student at Vista High School who came out with some friends to watch the races. “It is really fun to watch these old cars race and to hear the sound of the engines.” In addition to the racing action, visitors witnessed the newest and perhaps the most exhilarating edition to the festival; the drifting exhibition, which was performed by San Diego-based Drift Circuit. Drifting is the art of putting a speeding car into a controlled skid, during which the driver is awarded points based on style, angle, speed, and skill. Visitors were also able to take in the various static displays of a variety of vehicles, both military and civilian, on display throughout the weekend. Tours of the pits were also available to fans between races. Surprisingly, the event was not all about old cars. In fact, several modern vehicles made an appearance at the event, including a few NASCAR racers. Live music and endless concessions stands selling everything from sausage dogs to cotton candy rounded out the day for spectators. |
