help.pngIn 2007, the School of Infantry West, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provided more than $795,000 for Marines and sailors.

Vena Fredericks, director, SOI-W, NMCRS works to help those families get back on their feet through no-interest loans and grants for emergencies. The money is available to them, along with budget counseling, also. The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society is a private, non-profit, volunteer, service organization which provides financial assistance to active duty and retired service members and their families.

She explained despite being one of the smaller offices at Camp Pendleton, they are constantly busy.

Fredericks, from Oceanside, has worked with NMCRS for more than 15 years. Before that, she worked as a volunteer at Cherry Point, N.C., and Parris Island, S.C., for three years.

Because her husband is a retired Marine, she understands the hardships service members and military families can go through and feels strongly about helping them.

“I think it’s hard for people to ask strangers for help…I am glad to help take the load off their shoulder,” she said.

This year, NMCRS began providing quick-assistance loans for emergencies or unexpected bills such as utility, transportation, medical bills or food.

The loans are $300 and carry no interest, explained Fredericks.

“They can choose how fast they can pay back - in three to 10 months through allotments,” she added.

Work is sometimes difficult when Marines leave NMCRS without all their financial problems figured out, but Fredericks said the volunteer staff will do their best to find solutions.

“I love coming to work everyday because I work with people who choose to work here and are dedicated to helping Marines,” said Fredericks.
