Camp Pendleton drivers can expect traffic delays at the intersections of Vandegrift Boulevard and Barnett Circle as well as Vandegrift Boulevard and 19th Street until safety improvements have been completed.
Only one lane in each direction will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Road signs and cones will be posted to control traffic.
Construction is expected to be completed for Vandegrift Boulevard and Barnett Circle April 6. Construction on Vandegrift Boulevard and 19th Street is set to be finished April 28.
The additions to Vandegrift Boulevard and 19th Street will include a traffic light. A pedestrian crosswalk will also be included to reduce the risk of accidents involving patrons crossing the intersection.
“The light will provide better control of traffic and the cross walk will make the intersection safe for pedestrians,” said Bill G. Eich, deputy director, public works office, Marine Corps Base.
A new stop light will also be installed at Vandegrift Boulevard and Barnett Circle, in order to improve traffic flow at the congested junction.
“It will provide a safer commute for peak-time traffic and reduce the probabilities of accidents,” said Eich
The original designs were re-evaluated during a traffic-safety study conducted by Garnnett Fleming Incorporated. The study examined and ranked the most hazardous intersections on base.
Additional construction is scheduled for the main gate as well. Camp Pendleton patrons will notice an increase in the number of inspection lanes and, an overhead  lane assignment sign to direct motorists, in addition to and more security improvements.
Construction is scheduled to begin in March.
